Capsule 001: the fourteen

Capsule 001: the fourteen — The Southerly journal

The first capsule is fourteen pieces: seven tees, two longsleeves, three hoodies and two caps. All of it is in sample development. We have not put a garment in anyone’s hands yet, including our own, so we are not making claims about fabric, fit or feel until we have. What we can talk about is why each piece exists.

The poster prints

Five pieces carry illustrated artwork, framed the way old travel posters were framed: a border, a title above it, a quiet line underneath.

The Long Lunch is an overhead table — prawns, mango, a bottle sweating in ice, cards mid-game. It is the most Australian scene we could think of that has nothing to do with the beach itself.

Whitsundays is reef channels and green islands with one cruiser moving through. Noosa is the headland track through pandanus with a clean point below and one paddler out. Sydney–Hobart is yachts heeling south off the heads on Boxing Day, and it lives on a longsleeve because that is a sailing garment. Après Surf is boards leaning on a tailgate at first light, a thermos, towels, nobody in the frame yet.

The type pieces

Three pieces carry no illustration at all. Burleigh Heads is a stacked serif lockup with the coordinates underneath. The Southerly Club Hoodie and Longsleeve carry the Club lockup: the wordmark, Est. QLD, and 27.4°S 153.0°E. Restraint is the point. If you know, you know, and if you do not, it still reads as a clean piece of typography.

The ones that say something

Salt Water Fixes Most Things. Sunburnt, Not Sorry. I Swim Better Than I Work. Three lines that are funnier because they are true.

Then there is the Southerly Club Rules tee, which is the closest thing we have to a manifesto:

  1. Sunscreen before sunrise.
  2. Linen wrinkles are earned.
  3. The southerly calls last drinks.
  4. Never rush a long lunch.

That is it. That is the club.

The caps

Channel Marker takes the wayfinder mark, embroidered front and centre. Last Light takes the half-sun device in coral, for the hour everyone stays out for.

What happens next

Samples first. We inspect them against the specs, we photograph the real garments rather than showing you renders forever, and we publish the fabric and sizing detail only once it has been verified. Then Capsule 001 opens — and the list hears before anyone else.
